FROM THE DESK OF ELLEN FISHER, PUBLISHER, WOMEN'S YELLOW PAGES

Bonnie Neubauer, eZine editor, here. As most of you probably know, Ellen's dad, Samuel M. Fisher, CPA, passed away last week. He lived with Ellen and, because the Women's Yellow Pages office is also in her house, I had the good fortune and honor to get to know him over the last few years. When he needed something he would call our attic office and say, "It's your downstairs neighbor. I am wondering if you you can stop by for a minute." I will miss that, as well as meeting up with him in the kitchen where he dutifully did his daily physical therapy exercises.

Sam had a steel trap of a mind and was known for always asking poignant questions. He also had a knack for getting people to 'up their game' and aim high and go for their goals and dreams. The thing I will miss the most, however, is his optimism and the way he approached life with a smile and calm demeanor no matter what the circumstances.

Mr. Fisher was not just Ellen's father, he was also her mentor. On more than one occasion he confided in me how unbelievably proud he was of Ellen in terms of her parenting, business acumen, and especially her involvement in the community. As one who knows both of them, I have to say that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

I am pretty sure that Ellen's ability to tell a good story (that can magically include both a life lesson and a business lesson in the same tale) comes from her dad. One of his favorites is the story of how Temple University, his alma mater, was founded and funded. It's called Acres of Diamonds and is about how you can find whatever it is you are seeking right in your own back yard. Here is a link to an abridged version so you can enjoy it, too. http://rhenion.com/acres_of_diamonds.htm

Sam Fisher was an extremely brilliant business man who gave back to his community in hundreds of ways. Some of them are touched upon in this obituary that appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer: http://articles.philly.com/2011-12-31/news/30576837_1_love-canal-broomall-auditor. I hope you will take the time to read it and learn about the great man who raised Ellen and her four fantastic siblings. Yes, Ellen is one of five!

Ellen Fisher, Founder and Publisher, will return next month with a regular column.
