FIRST JOB: When I was 14, I worked at a farm picking corn, strawberries and watermelon.

HOW/WHY CHOSE FIELD: I wanted to follow in my sister's footsteps and become a physician. But I wanted to take care of the sickest patients.

MOST PROUD OF: Educating my patients and their families.

KEYS TO SUCCESS: Honesty, empathy, and definitely humility.

MOTIVATOR: Life itself; I see a lot of death and it reminds me to always live to the fullest.

I WISH I HAD KNOWN YEARS AGO: How smart my parents are.

LIFE LESSON: Be good at the things you really care about and give up what's not important.

MENTOR: My mother who grew up poor and finished school while raising 4 kids. She instilled the love of learning and taught us the value of independence.

LEADERSHIP TIP: Focus on process improvement, not on blame.

ADVICE TO PASS ON: Laugh lots; it helps.

FOR A LAUGH: I play with my 2 boys who are silly, funny, innocent, and always make me laugh.
